My New Year’s Resolutions…a week and a half late

I was watching a Tivo’d episode of Leno last night that featured George Clooney and Maria Lark, the girl that plays the middle child on “Medium”. Leno asked Clooney what his New Year’s Resolutions were, and Clooney said “I quit smoking.” Everyone clapped and Leno says, “I didn’t know you smoked.” Clooney responds with, “I don’t. But it was either that or quit drinking.” Only Clooney…

Anyway…it got me thinking that it was about time for me to make my Resolutions, since I’m generally a week late in writing them. Every year I think I’m not going to make Resolutions, and then I hear about everyone else’s and I get jealous that I didn’t make any. So here we go…my New Year’s Resolutions for 2007:

  • Learn to make devilled eggs
  • I love devilled eggs. I have a vague notion of how to make them. I’ve always wanted to make them. Not even for a party…just to eat. I think 2007 is the perfect year to learn.

  • Make a cake from scratch
  • I enjoy baking. I make pastries and cakes all the time…but from a box. I’m lucky enough to have a thoughtful future-mother-in-law that bought me a stand mixer for Christmas, an item that’s been on my list for months. Now that I have the correct tools, it’s time for me to start baking from scratch. Starting with a classic chocolate cake. Hopefully by the end of the year I’ll be able to make cakes, pies, pastries, etc, etc…all from scratch.

  • Completely update my resume
  • Since my time at Rykodisc ended, I’ve been trying to completely update my resume. More specifically, I want to have two resumes: one for marketing and one for media. I got lucky enough to land a short-term contract job with my resume as it stands. I don’t know that the same resume will land me another one.

  • Read more books
  • Thanks to my extremely short commute to work when I was with Ryko, I had no time to read on the train. I used to pride myself on having reading as one of my favorite activities. Juggling college, several jobs and internships, homework and social activities, not to mention sleep…I stopped reading as much. I was ashamed to say I liked reading, because the inevitable follow-up question is “what have you read lately?” It’s pretty depressing when the answer is “Nothing.” This year, I resolve to read more, and to branch out in my choices. As much as I love Stephen King and James Patterson, it’s time for me to start reading other things I enjoy. Biographies, the classics, re-reading old favorites.
Finally, last but definitely not least…

  • Don’t turn into Bridezilla
  • I am unbelievably excited about being engaged. The task of planning a wedding is before me. I will not turn into a crazy woman. I will not scream at caterers. I will not buy a $3000 dress. I will not cry if someone who said they weren’t bringing a date decides to bring one. Most of all, I will remember, every single day, that this wedding is about Mike and I getting married. It is not about food, or the dress, or the flowers, or the cake…well, maybe a little about the cake for Mike. In the end it’s about us planning a huge party to celebrate the fact that we’re both just insane and cynical enough to be madly in love with each other.
Those are my resolutions for 2007. If anyone catches me breaking one, call me on it. Especially that last one. On the other hand, if you’d like the sample the results of the first two, let me know.
